I had the pleasure of meeting Adrian while facilitating a Field Coaching Course in February. He was a huge, positive presence on our course. His sense of humour kept the mood light and he managed to keep his group on track - not an easy task!

From what I remember, he was looking forward to the challenge of being a coach as he wanted to be a positive role model; to teach his member the right way to do things but to still enjoy the job. His loss will be felt throughout the Force.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you,

Heather

Family, Friends and Co-Workers of Cst. Oliver:

Our heart goes out to you over the tragic loss of your son, brother, friend and colleague.

We also wish to express our sincere thanks for his service to the community.

Both our son and daughter-in-law are members of the RCMP and we pray each day that they return safely from their shift. The dedication to service by all members of the policing community is so apparent and the bond of brotherhood is unmatched in any other sector of society.

Hopefully the comfort of the public sector will enlighten your sense of pride you must have in knowing your son was an active part of that special brotherhood.

Special thanks for sharing your son with our community.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Adrian, you, family and friends at the loss of our adopted brother to the Force.

My Brother
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his
community and to his country.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strive to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.
He was a cop.
Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my brother.

Joe, Kate, Ben and Thomas,

I am so sad at your loss. Nathalie wrote to me as soon as she heard and I was overcome with grief; not only because of Adian's passing but also because I can only imagine the pain you are feeling. I immediately thought of those times, at Xmas and other occasions when we'd been to your house in Woodstock and I'd wrestle with the boys or just play around and tease them. I used to think to myself how lucky you were to have such a nice family and how you instilled good values.

Although I've not seen Adrian in many years, I remember how proud you were when you told me, Joe, that he'd joined the Force. I remember thinking how Adrian would make a fine member and I see from the testimonials of those who knew him, that he was.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. My heart is with you.

Rick Bernard

There are no words to graciously acknowledge the tragedy that has befallen your family. I can only say thank you for raising a son into the kind of man that would sacrifice himself in the service of others. The Soul Behind the Badge

The price is steep and the toll is high
And it’s paid for you and me
It’s paid by those Behind the Badge
To keep us safe and free
Behind the Badge is a lonely place
That few will ever know
A place of fear and darkness
Where you’ll never need to go
The line is thin, and the walls are low
But they’re manned both night and day
Behind the Badge they stand on guard
They keep us from harm’s way
Behind the Badge a person stands
A mother, son or wife
A husband, child or father
Prepared to give their life
Yes, the toll is high and the price is steep
To keep us safe and free
So don’t forget that Behind the Badge
Stands a soul like you and me

To Constable Adrian Oliver’s Family,

I cannot imagine your pain or your sorrow at this time. To lose your son so young is more than a tragedy, it breaks the heart into pieces that will never mend. But please let me share what I feel about your son and the qualities I know he had. His sense of justice, fairness, honor and goodness. His wanting to make a difference in this world, to help people above all things. His whole being was to serve and protect. His deep love inside and his strength to do what is right and stand up for what is right. Your son gave all of himself to a dedication of serving humanity – to make our world a better place. Your son had Police Officer in his blood – a rare breed of men and woman who are a gift to all of us on this earth. Your son was taken from us way to young, but what he did in his short life is an inspiration to all of us. I thank you for your son – for his sacred life and please know that it was not in vain – for his life was ever so sacred to me and my family.

There is a brotherhood of blue around your family and the Police Brotherhood will be there always for your family to lean on. There is not a more honorable calling than being a Police Officer. Amen for this brotherhood that will be there to hold you up. I am a little part of this brotherhood as a mother of a Montreal Police Officer – SPVM, who is 30 years old. I cannot even fathom the pain you are going through, but please know my prayers, my love and my support are with your family. I am so deeply sorry.

Proud Mom of a Montreal Police Officer,

To the family of Cst Oliver

Above all else, Adrian is a son and brother. I cannot imagine how it must feel to lose someone so young and in such tragic and sudden circumstances. I can only offer to you my thoughts and in some small way share your grief at this terrible time.

To his colleagues in Surrey and across Canada
It is many years since I proudly wore the uniform of an auxiliary in Richmond BC., but I remember the sense of loss and sadness when we, too, lost a colleague. I know the RCMP family will wrap its arms around the Olivers just as they did all those years ago to another family. Thank you all for the service you give to your communities, you really are the very best.

My deepest heartfelt condolences to family of Cst Adrian Oliver and fellow members of the Force at Surrey Detachment and elsewhere.

H.D."Bud" Bowyer, S/Sgt. (Rtd).

We are so sad to learn that Adrian died this week when returning to work at the end of his shift. We are an RCMP family as well, and anytime a Mountie falls, we feel great sadness. We put ourselves in the grieving family's shoes because, "it could have been us this time." This time, it has hit closer to home.
Adrian was a good friend of ours when we all went to high school together. We went to Mexico together, prom, camping, canoe trips, and epic high school parties. He is a shining light and was an asset to the RCMP with endless enthusiasm, pride and morals.
We will miss him greatly, and join his family and friends in grieving his death, but also in celebrating his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ben, his brother Thomas, his parents and his girlfriend.

My name is Shawn Pyke, I went to high school with Adrian and though we were not particularly close (i was a grade ahead of him) it was easy to see how good a person he was. I remember how close he was with his brother and the thought of them being separated like this breaks my heart. Anyone was lucky to know him, and anyone that knew him was his friend. He always had kind words to speak, and he always had something funny to say that could easily catch you off guard. I have not seen him since I graduated high school which feels like a hundred years ago- I don't know that i would have ever seen him again since his career brought him so far across this country, and yet the fact that he is gone is truly tragic. I cannot imagine what his family is going through right now. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Good morning,

I was informed that I could pass along my condolences for the loss of Adrian Oliver to his family through this e-mail address.

I went to high school with Adrian where I quickly become good friends with him and his brother Ben. Adrian was always in a good mood, with a smile on his face. I am proud that he was able to fulfill his dream of becoming an RCMP Officer and I know that he served his country well. My thoughts and prayers go out to Adrian's family, friends and to the entire Surrey, B.C. detachment during this difficult time. I'll miss you Twin A

I first met Adrian in my initial time at Depot, as he was in my Big Brother troop. Even in those early bewildering days of Depot, Adrian's outgoing personality made him stand out.

The weeks went on and Adrian became a familiar face to our troop. I was slower to pick up on it, but it turned out he was there for a special someone, instead of the rest of us. Despite that, he was always a great guy and always open to questions.

I last saw Adrian when he and Shelagh met my wife and I along with a few troop mates from the north who were down for block training; for wings and beer. That evening he was the same happy, congenial and all round good guy that I met back in February, 2009.

Adrian was a friend to everyone he met and respected by them as well. The hole he leaves behind will always be there he will be forever for us will be forever rememberedI am thankful for having met him and wish all of you my sincerest condolences and strongest sympathies.

To the Family of Constable Adrian Oliver,

As a former Civilian Member of the RCMP, I want to express my incredible sympathy for the void left by this young man, who died in the line of duty.

While I didn’t know Adrian personally, I worked for the Lower Mainland District in Surrey…and today I feel such a heavy heart, that he reported for duty...and never came home.

While you must feel the shock from the void - where there was once a presence and a spirit…and while they may be silence, you are not alone. Please know Adrian and you are in our thoughts…and I believe Adrian’s spirit is around us...and like a warm blanket, around you for sure.

With deep respect,

Sandy Poggemiller

To Const Oliver’s Family,

The news of a RCMP officer’s death in a car crash on 148th and 64th Avenue came as a shock as I drove to work.

There is no accounting for such a monumental unexpected loss. It really does affect so many of us on differing levels.

Your immediate loss of a wonderful son is tragic. We, too, as a community feel his loss, sadness, and are reminded of

values still upheld in society and embodied in such a fine young man and Constable of the RCMP. God bless.

Hi there,

My name is Jason HONG, I worked and still am working with D-Watch. I met Adrian a few times in District 2 and I fortunately had the pleasure to work with Adrian in a few files when there was overlap between D and C watch.

I could recall I got a Missing File of an Elderly Male that somehow crossed over in the United States. Adrian helped me out on that file and actually located that Missing! I could recall he wrote a note on my returned pass-on: "Missing Found!" I just remembered being really impressed!

I didn't know him that well but we crossed paths a few times and it was a pleasure in working with him :) Just came off as a really friendly guy.

-Jason.

To the Family of Cst. Adrian Oliver, his colleagues at Surrey Detachment and the men and women of "E" Division.

I am truly saddened by the death of Adrian and all the ripple effect of grief, loss and shattered dreams that it entails. We are so well trained, equipped and prepared to handle violent events , that to lose one of our own in such seemingly commonplace circumstances just leaves us baffled.

I worked in uniform for my first 5 years, but have been in a non-contract division for the past 29. I have great respect and admiration for you members in uniform who are out there day and night, You are doing important work and I am proud that you do it so well.

Dear Joe, Kate and Family,

There are few words that would sincerely express how heartbreaking it was to have learned of Adrian's tragic passing. As a parent, or as a member, I cannot begin to understand the sense of your loss nor the state of your world today.

What I do know is that you were extremely proud of him not only as a member of the RCMP but of all that he accomplished and the joy he brought to those who knew him. Thank you for sharing him with our RCMP family.

May you find strength and comfort from each other in the days ahead.

To the family and friends of Constable Adrian OLIVER,

On behalf of the Executive, Board of Directors and the dedicated women and men of the Winnipeg Police Association with a heavy heart I pass on our deepest sympathy for the loss of your loved one. The country has lost a proud citizen, a family has lost a loved son and a brother, a community has lost a beacon of safety and an example to its young people, and a profession has lost a fine officer. The Thin Blue Line is a little thinner. Words and wishes will not replace this fine officer, but take comfort in the fact that he will be mourned and remembered by all who take the oath to serve and protect.

Fraternally,

George Van Mackelbergh

Vice President

Winnipeg Police Association
