Just before 8 am on Thursday June 23rd, 2016, Shawnigan Lake RCMP received a report of a two vehicle collision on the Malahat just north of the Split Rock view point. Shawnigan Lake RCMP, South Island Traffic Services RCMP, BC Ambulance Services and Malahat Fire services attended the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates, a Mazda pickup truck travelling southbound on Highway 1 towards Victoria crossed the centre line of the Highway, colliding with a northbound Chevrolet pickup truck.

The Mazda pickup was struck on the passenger side by a northbound Chevrolet pickup. The occupant to the Chevrolet pickup truck sustained minor injuries and was transported to Victoria General Hospital. The driver to the Chevrolet pickup is cooperating with Police and is recovering. The occupant of the Mazda pickup sustained life threatening injuries and remains in critical condition at the Victoria General Hospital.

The driver of the Mazda pick up was identified as a 41 year old female from the Shawnigan Lake area. The drivers name is not being release at this time.

The Malahat was closed for several hours while the scene examination was completed. The highway has since been re-opened.
