RCMP notify IIO BC of a police involved shooting in Shawnigan Lake

On November 10, 2018, police officers from the Shawinigan Lake RCMP were following up on an assault investigation in the 1100 block of Mill Bay Road. Shortly after 12:00 noon members attended a home with the intention of arresting a lone male in connection with the incident. Upon entering the residence, the officers were met with a male who they indicate advanced on them with an edged weapon. Members attempted to deploy a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) without success. Shots were fired by police. The male was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
No police officers nor any other members of the public were injured.
The scene and any evidence have been secured while the Independent Investigation Office of BC have been notified and are deploying to the scene. IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation into the police involved shooting.
Additional RCMP resources have been deployed to Shawingan Lake in order to maintain core policing services.
As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police. Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the IIO BC at 1-855-446-8477.
