File # 2019-9934
On September 7 at approximately 4 p.m., the Oceanside RCMP were called to the 3400 block of Alberni Highway in Whiskey Creek. The complainant had arrived home and heard noises in her basement. The complainant believed it was family in the basement, so she called out. When nobody answered and yet she still heard rummaging downstairs she immediately called police. A suspect male then ran up the stairs and out of the house carrying gun cases.
As police attended the area, they set up containment and called RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS). PDS arrived and started tracking down a nearby creek. The suspect was located hiding nearby and was arrested without incident. When the suspect was arrested, he did not have any stolen firearms with him. PDS was then used to keep searching nearby. The dog was able to quickly find the stolen hunting rifles.
The suspect, 28 year old Cody Jacob Corbett of no fixed address was taken into custody before he attended Nanaimo Provincial Court. Corbett has been remanded in custody and will make his next appearance on September 24.
We are truly fortunate to have access to police dogs and their highly skilled handlers. In cases like this they are an invaluable resource
