File # 2019-20359

One woman from Lake Cowichan has died and two others are in serious condition in hospital following a two vehicle collision involving an elk on highway 18 Tuesday night.

On November 19 at approximately 8pm North Cowichan/Duncan frontline police officers were called to the scene of a two vehicle collision on highway 18 between Duncan and Lake Cowichan. Two vehicles were involved, each travelling in opposite directions when one vehicle attempted to avoid collision with an elk on the roadway, this vehicle struck the elk and then struck the oncoming vehicle. One woman was found to be deceased on scene; one man and one woman in serious life threatening condition were air lifted to hospital.

This is a very tragic situation stated Sgt. Trevor Busch. Collisions with animals are not uncommon, I would like to remind motorists to drive defensively, slow down and leave plenty of distance from the next vehicle to allow the best chance to see wildlife.

The BC Coroners Service was contacted and is in the early stages of its fact-finding investigation. The BC Coroners Service investigates all sudden, unexpected and/or unnatural deaths in the province to determine who died, how, where, when and by what means. Investigators from the North Cowichan/Duncan General Investigation Section and Island District Traffic Services Collision Reconstructionist have spoken with witnesses to the collision and are continuing to investigate.

On November 20th at 7am a second vehicle collision was reported with an elk near Lake Cowichan on Highway 18. In this incident the driver of the car was able to walk away with minor injuries. This incident is a reminder that collisions with wildlife can happen at any time stated Corporal Dave Motley from Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment I would urge motorists to drive according to conditions and be extra vigilant in foggy or dark conditions at dawn or dusk when wildlife is most active.
