File # RCMP File 2020-996 VIIMCU File 2020-667

On January 20th, 2020, just before 5am the North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP responded to a report of a man who was assaulted inside a residence on Mulaqw Road on Cowichan Tribes land. When Frontline RCMP members arrived they located a 53 year old man with serious injuries. First aid measures were started by police immediately, and the man was transported to hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Initial investigation at the scene has led investigators to believe that foul play was involved in the man’s death.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has taken conduct of this investigation and is working closely with the North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP, and the BC Coroners service. The investigation is currently in the early stages however investigators believe that this is an isolated incident and is not related to the double homicide from December 24th, 2019.

This tragic incident coming so soon after the Christmas Eve tragedy has shocked and saddened the public says North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP Officer in Charge Inspector Chris Bear I ask that if any members of our communities have information that could assist in this investigation to please contact VIIMCU or the North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP

Anyone with information is asked to call the VIIMCU information line at 250-380-6211, or the North Cowichan / Duncan RCMP Detachment at 250-748-5522
