File # 2020-16900

It is with heavy hearts that Chilliwack RCMP confirm that a nine-year-old girl and her ten-year-old brother died following yesterday’s tragic off road incident at Foley Lake off the Foley Creek Forest Service Road near Chilliwack.

The Chilliwack RCMP would like to extend its deepest condolences to the family and friends of those involved. What began as a day of recreation and family fun, quickly turned into every parent’s worst nightmare when a side by side style off road vehicle hit a tree root in a camber, left the roadway and tumbled down an embankment where it then became submerged in at least 15 feet of water, trapping the family of five. Two adults and one child survived but two young children died in the accident.

The RCMP would like to acknowledge and praise the heroic actions of witnesses on scene who quickly sprung into action in efforts to rescue the family. At least two witnesses plunged into the lake in an effort to rescue the family. Two adults and one child escaped but the other children remained trapped underwater. Their bodies were recovered on Sunday evening by the RCMP-GRCs Underwater Recovery Team.

The Chilliwack RCMP thanks all of the witnesses and first responders who assisted at the scene of this tragedy. We’d like to acknowledge the efforts of volunteers from Chilliwack Search and Rescue and the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department, as well as personnel from BC Ambulance and Air Ambulance, and the RCMP. This was obviously a very hard scene and your efforts are very much appreciated, says Sergeant Krista Vrolyk.

Efforts to recover the vehicle involved are underway. All of the vehicles occupants were wearing helmets and were secured by appropriate safety restraints. There is no indication of any criminality involved.

The BC Coroners Service is conducting its own investigation. Due to the privacy of the deceased, identities will not be confirmed. No further information is available from either BC Coroners Service or police.
