File # 2019-6750
On November 24th, 2019, at approximately 1:00 pm the Pemberton RCMP received information from a hiker in the area of the Phelix Creek Forest Service road that there was a burnt-out vehicle with items around it on the way to the Brian Waddington Hut.
Pemberton RCMP members attended and located the vehicle and items which identified the potential owner as Marshal Iwaasa and the burned truck resembled a vehicle which was registered to him in Alberta. In the following days extensive investigational tasks were completed and the members reached out to the Calgary Police Service and later the Lethbridge Police Service for information sharing and a collaborative investigation as to the whereabouts of Marshal.
The RCMP enlisted help from the Integrated Police Dog Services, Search and Rescue personnel and search dogs, Air Support, the Emergency Response Team for all to assist in an extensive search of the area where the truck was located. Over the course of a few weeks, additional searches were conducted by local Search and Rescue Teams and the Underwater Recovery Team (due to the water sources in the area), to see if Marshal or anyone had left the vehicle and was stranded in the backcountry. No one was located.
Over the last few months Pemberton RCMP has continued to follow-up on any additional information received, process various exhibits with the Integrated Forensic Investigation Services, and work with the investigators in Alberta, where Marshal was last seen. As of recent, Pemberton members attended to the snow line with bikes and a IPDS to search the area, which was more accessible due to the snow receding and improved weather. Nothing has been located.
We have worked extensively to find any information for Lethbridge Police Service and for the Iwaasa family as to why Marshal’s truck was located on the Phelix Creek FSR and we have yet to be able to answer those questions says Sergeant Sascha Banks.
We know this remote area is travelled more frequently in the summer months and are asking anyone who locates anything that may be of interest to police or has any information to call us.
Iwaasa is description is as below:
- 26 years old
- 170 lbs
- Brown Eyes and shoulder-length brown hair with a moustache
- At the time he disappeared he was wearing: green hoody, grey toque, red high-top shoes, and black pants
Any one with information as to the whereabouts of Marshal Iwaasa or information as to his Missing Persons investigation are asked to call the Lethbridge Police Service at 403-328-4444, call Pemberton RCMP 604-894-6634 or contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS/www.solvecrime.ca
