IIO BC notified of Richmond incident

RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident which resulted in the death of a man last night.

On May 28, 2020 at around 7:30 p.m, Richmond RCMP were called to a business on Steveston Highway in Richmond to assist a Loss Prevention Officer who was struggling with a shoplifting suspect.

Frontline officers arrived on scene to assist and to arrest the man. Shortly thereafter, the members determined that man was in medical distress, unresponsive and started first aid measures.

The male was transported to a nearby hospital where despite life saving measures performed by emergency medical personnel he died.

The IIO BC and the BC Coroners Service are now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s death. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
