On November 8, 2020, members of North Vancouver Island Traffic Services (NVITS) in Campbell River got more than they were expecting when they made a late-night traffic stop to check a suspicious vehicle on Macaulay Road in Black Creek.

Members on patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle with three occupants parked near mailboxes in the rural area and decided to check it out. The driver, a local woman, was not able to produce a driver’s licence, and one of the two passengers, both men from the local area, provided a false name. Further investigation determined the man’s true identity and the fact he had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

During the arrest of the wanted man, the officer found him to be wearing a shoulder holster. A further search yielded suspected narcotics. The second man was also arrested and the vehicle was searched subsequent to the arrest. Officers found more narcotics and a fully loaded 9mm handgun under the seat where the wanted man had been sitting. A second handgun (.22 calibre) and ammunition was found in the rear seat area where the second man was sitting.

Seized Pistol and Shotgun

Both men were taken into custody and the vehicle was towed to a secure location. A search warrant was granted to conduct a further search of the vehicle. Investigators found a sawed-off shotgun, an SKS rifle, ammunition for both firearms, stolen identification, jewelry and more suspected narcotics.

Both men will be facing numerous charges with respect to firearms, narcotics and other offences related to this investigation.

This incident demonstrates the unpredictability Traffic Officers face every time they stop a vehicle, which they do as part of their daily duties to keep our roads and communities safe. Help take a bite out of crime by reporting suspicious activity in your neighbourhood to your local police or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
