File # 2020-24572

A seven-year-old boy has returned safely to the custody of his father after allegedly being abducted by his mother.

On July 18th, Langley RCMP was advised the boy had not been returned to his father as planned that morning. What began as a check on the well-being investigation, soon became a Missing Person investigation and just as quickly officers determined they were looking at a Parental Abduction.

Investigators encountered challenges along the way to confirm the location of the child. Front Line officers requested the assistance of Plainclothes Investigators who then used various investigative techniques to determine a likely location of the mother. She was located at a residence in Abbotsford BC on July 25th. Abbotsford Police Department assisted Langley RCMP with attempts to arrest the mother for abduction and apprehend the boy. Police encountered significant resistance from a male occupant in the residence elevating the risk factors for all involved. Police took appropriate actions to defuse the situation and reduce the risk to the young boy and everyone involved.

Investigators applied for and were granted warrants to support investigative options and enter the residence.

Two days later, the Integrated Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team entered the residence and arrested the 47-year-old mother and her 49-year-old male partner. The boy was found safe during a search of the residence. He was very happy to be reunited with his father.

A report has been prepared and will be presented to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.

The collaborative partnerships fostered by all involved agencies from Abbotsford PD, Langley RCMP and the LMD ERT made navigating the challenges of this investigation that much easier.

Considerable patience was required and taken to ensure the child was never put at risk during this investigation. Decision making was always based around the safety and security of the child.

Superintendent Murray Power, Officer in Charge, Langley Detachment, These are incredibly challenging investigations for a variety of reasons and to achieve a successful resolution in a timely and safe manner is a credit to all the investigators and participating agencies.
