File # 2019-21236

North Vancouver RCMP is pleased to have been able to prevent the loss of $9300 from a local senior who fell prey to a con-artist.

On August 3, 2019, the North Vancouver resident was contacted by a fraudster who purported to be her grandson. The fraudster convinced her that there was an emergency, and that he needed her to send him cash. He told her not to talk with anyone else, and gave her instructions on how to send him the cash by courier.

The victim began to be suspicious after she had sent the money, and contacted the RCMP. Thankfully, police were able to stop the delivery in time, and the cash has been returned to the victim.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this particular scam, said Sgt. Doug Trousdell, North Vancouver RCMP Media Relations Officer. It’s despicable that someone would target a senior citizen in this way, preying on their kindness. We’re gratified to be able to get the money back in this case, but we know that many other victims haven’t been so lucky.

The investigation continues into the identity of the suspect.
