Since North Vancouver RCMP launched online crime reporting system 3 months ago, North Vancouver residents have been making good use of the service. "We’re happy to see how many people have been reporting through the website," said Sgt. Peter DeVries of the North Vancouver RCMP. "Maybe it’s because people have been at home more, maybe it’s just because it’s such a convenient way to report, but whatever the reason, we like what we see."

"We’ve received around 90 since we launched in February," said DeVries, who noted most reports have been for mischief and thefts from auto. On 14 occasions the Detachment dispatched an officer to follow up on some investigative steps, but the remainder of the reports were opened and completed the same day without a need for officer attendance. "It allows officers to spend more time focussing on other community safety initiatives. And in terms of COVID-19, it’s been a healthy and safe way to limit personal contact between officers and the public. When you look at it that way, that’s around 75 times we’ve been able to prevent contact that could have spread the virus."

A typical report will take around 15 minutes to complete. "All we need is your name, address, phone number and email address," said DeVries. "Users just have to click a link to get started." The link is available on the Detachment’s website (https://ocre-sielc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/nvan/en).

Any resident of North Vancouver can use online crime reporting if the incident took place within the jurisdiction of the North Vancouver RCMP and they have:
