Sidney / North Saanich RCMP are excited to announce the launch of Project 529 Bicycle Registry for residents of Sidney, North Saanich and Saanich Peninsula Indigenous Communities. Project 529 Bicycle Registry is an international bicycle registry program that makes it easier than ever to register a bike and mark it stolen if a theft occurs.
Sidney / North Saanich RCMP believe Project 529 Bicycle Registry will improve bicycle recovery, deter thieves, improve the morale of the biking community, and help the police return lost and stolen bikes to their rightful owners. Project 529 Bicycle Registry is multijurisdictional and encompass many cities both in the U.S. and Canada.
529 Garage is an online mobile application registration system, which will allow the Sidney / North Saanich RCMP and bicycle enthusiasts to join forces through improved education, prevention and communication to combat bicycle theft in our community. The 529 Garage App has the potential to effectively reduce the number of bike thefts and increase the number of recovered bikes that police can then return to their rightful owners.
To register a bike, either download the 529 Garage smartphone app or visit project529.com/sidneynorthsaanich. Registrants will be required to provide an email address along with the bike’s make, model and serial number. As well you are strongly encouraged to add photos of your bike.
Sidney / North Saanich RCMP Detachment will provide registrants who provide proof of residing in Sidney, North Saanich and Saanich Peninsula Indigenous Communities with a free
shield sticker to deter thieves.
If a registered bike is stolen, the owner can use the Project 529 app or website to notify nearby Project 529 members of the theft.
The search capabilities of the 529 Garage will be beneficial to law enforcement officials, local bike shops and community residents as it will allow each to quickly determine whether or not a bike has been reported as stolen.
Anyone who thinks they saw the bike can instantly upload a message to police and the owner. If police come across an abandoned bike, they can search the database for the bike via the sticker number, the bike’s description or the bike’s photo.
