File # 2023-7911

At approximately 2:30 p.m. the West Shore RCMP received a report of two males in a vehicle near College Rd and Thetis Crescent that were in possession of a long gun. The report indicated the males were pointing the long gun in the direction of the trees at this location before getting out and walking into the wooded area.

West Shore RCMP immediately contained the area. Given the proximity to both John Stubbs School and Royal Roads University was asked them to place their schools under a hold a secure while police worked to locate the male suspects. We also notified the nearby Military Police of the ongoing situation for their awareness.

At approximately 3:30pm, West Shore RCMP safely arrested the two males and confirmed they were in possession of a replica rifle. The males are currently in police custody as we continue our investigation. The hold and secure has been lifted and we thank the public for their patience.

West Shore RCMP has concluded their investigation into this incident.  Two male suspects ages 20 and 21 years old were arrested by police for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Upon inspecting the long gun officers determine it to be a replica rifle.

Officers noted the replica rifle was incredibly realistic in both it's look and weight. The men advised police they had just purchased the replica airsoft rifle and wanted to try it out in the wooded area where they were arrested. The replica firearm was never pointed at anyone or purposely used to intimidate or threaten anyone.

After speaking with police both men understood the fear and concern they brought about by carrying this rifle in public near a school. They have since relinquished the replica rifle to the RCMP and apologized for their actions. They were released from custody without charges.

"We would like to remind the public that although replica firearms themselves are not illegal, if they are used in the commission of an offence you can be facing weapons-related charges. Please be mindful of your actions and surroundings when possessing such items," said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.
