Two calls for help on the Cowichan River

With the May Long weekend a few days away, the Lake Cowichan RCMP have already received two calls for service this season regarding the Cowichan River.

On Tuesday May 2nd, 2023, the Lake Cowichan RCMP responded to a report of a tuber in the river without a lifejacket, yelling for help. Officers attended, and located a 19 year-old man from Vancouver, along with 7 others stranded on the side of the river.

On Saturday May 13th, 2023, the Lake Cowichan RCMP responded to a report of a capsized vessel with 5 adults and a child involved.

Both incidents are unrelated, and everyone was located safe. said Constable David Prak, spokesperson for the Lake Cowichan RCMP This is a good reminder for everyone, that the river is not safe to be tubing or swimming in at this time of year.

Both calls for service, were also attended by the Lake Cowichan Fire Department. Fire Chief Doug Knott said The river right now is cool due to the snow melt. Water levels are still high and flowing fast, which can push you into down trees, popping your tube, or worse pulling you under.

Brian Twaites, a 36-year paramedic and public information officer with BC Emergency Health Services said We know with warm weather, too, that more people will be participating in recreational activities. With that, we encourage people to wear a personal-flotation device on or near the water, and remind people never to mix alcohol and drugs with water activity, including tubing and boating.

On behalf of the Town of Lake Cowichan Joseph Fernandez, CAO of Town of Lake Cowichan said It’s that time of the year again when residents and visitors alike can get to enjoy the pristine and beautiful Cowichan Lake area with activities including boating, fishing, and tubing. However, these activities must be enjoyed in moderation and with a good deal of caution given the current heat conditions and fast flowing waterways.

Public safety is a top priority for the Lake Cowichan RCMP, Lake Cowichan Fire Department, BC Emergency Health Services, and the Town of Lake Cowichan. Please remember water safety is a shared responsibility.
