On June 3rd, 2012 at approximately 2:00 pm, emergency services were called to Tsehum Harbour in Sidney to aid a man that had fallen overboard nearby. Emergency Services and bystanders worked hard to save the man, but he died at the scene.
The 55 yr old man from North Saanich was on a sailboat with his wife, returning to harbour when he was knocked overboard by equipment on board the vessel. Immediate attempts to rescue him were unsuccessful. Occupants of a nearby boat managed to quickly get him out of the water, but he was now unresponsive. He was not wearing a personal flotation device.
It appears that this was a tragic accident and not suspicious in nature, although the RCMP and Coroner continue to investigate. Our thoughts go to his family in this time of grief.
Boaters and users of the water are reminded to use all safety equipment that is available to them, in order to prevent this type of tragedy from happening again.
